It is unbelievable in the amount of blessings I have reaped from being a part of Aumakua BJJ.  I have been a fitness practitioner for a number of years, but wondered how much of my body building could be functionally used outside of the gym.  Last year, a good friend invited me to try out BJJ.  After a couple of weeks, I soon got the BJJ Bug.  Now I am in the best shape ever.  But even more importantly, I have acquired a skill of defense & a high level of confidence, something I could never claim before.

I have been a martial artist for over 30 years and have found nothing that challenges me as physically as training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. At 49 years old, I have the conditioning and stamina of someone half my age.
With all the health and fitness benefits aside, it’s just plain fun. It’s like a chess game on the ground that is as much a mental game as well as a physical game. I plan to keep training well into my 70’s if not longer.

I actively played basketball in the high school and college level, and continue to coach the sport regularly.  Unfortunately, I recently began to find myself missing the competitiveness of the game.  I first observed BJJ in mid ’08 and have been training since Nov. ’08. I have found it to be exciting, challenging, an excellent workout, and finally, something that feeds my competitive nature perfectly.

I have been with Aumakua for about 1 year now and it has been a great part of my life. My 2 daughters have been doing Karate for over two years now and just have started taking the kids Jiu-Jitsu classes on Saturday mornings, and love them. Now that I am doing it, we can do it together and helps us spend more time as a family. I have been out of the Marine Corps for 5 years now and this has allowed me to regain the strength and endurance that I used to have in my early twenties. Not only does Jiu-Jitsu have its own challenges but it teaches me how to adapt to an unusual circumstance and be able to use my skills to fight to the end. I hope to be able to keep growing in my knowledge and skills and to encourage my children too as well.
